O2 Wear – Bamboo Style Basics

grey dots

O2 Wear is a baby of a company, only established last year by Anna Malovka. Anna had the fine idea of creating a business that sold style basics that were comfortable to wear and environmentally friendly.

The entire range is made purely from bamboo viscose that has been certified by the Oeko-tex 100 Standard meaning that the finished product is entirely free from toxins and chemicals.  Spandex and a small amount of organic cotton are also found in the pieces.

Choosing bamboo is a superb choice when it comes to clothing. It has many benefits over cotton, with a luxuriously lightweight feel it is hypoallergenic and is incredible soft. Bamboo is environmentally friendly and grows quite fast meaning it doesn’t require any pesticides or much water to enhance growth.

o2wear

O2Wear have a top 10 benefits of choosing bamboo and why it can be of benefit to you –

  • Eco-friendly : Due to being a raw material
  • Softness : Bamboo feels wonderfully soft, smooth and gentle against your skin
  • Sensitive Skin : Allergy sufferers sing the praises of bamboo – it isn’t made with any chemicals and is naturally antibacterial.
  • Easy Care : Completely machine washable, you don’t have to worry about it going out of shape.
  • Moisture Wicking : Perfect for those who participate in sports and yoga – bamboo has almost twice the moisture transfer then cotton, leaving you feeling more comfortable.
  • Biodegradable : Being completely made from nature, bamboo is thus biodegradable.
  • UV Protection : Studies from Deakin University have shown that bamboo fabric is 60% more efficient at protecting the wearer from UV rays then ordinary cotton.
  • Breathability : Bamboo fabric is a natural temperature regulator – it is cool to wear during the warmer months and will keep you toasty and warm during the colder months.
  • Insulating : Being a naturally insulating fabric, bamboo clothing helps trap a small layer of air against your skin, creating insulation. As mentioned above, this helps to keep you cool and warm where needed.
  • Antibacterial : The antibacterial properties come from the bamboo plant which is rarely attacked by bugs/pests and is not susceptible to plant diseases.

Having tested the camisole (in pink, of course!) and leggings I can vouch that I am definitely impressed by bamboo fabric. It is indeed very soft and touchable, with great flexibility making it quite adequate for daily wear. There are no issues when it comes to washing the items and they fit well. As the weather is now becoming colder, wearing the camisole/leggings under clothes is a clever way to keep warm, without looking overly puffy due to many layers of clothing.

RRP – $29.95 for the camisole, available in 4 colours.

$39.95 for the leggings, available in black.

Interview with SOSUME designer Alex Trimmer

grey dots

Alex Trimmer is the clever brains behind the Eco-friendly fashion label, SOSUME. Australian based and manufactured, Alex has the right idea when it comes to fashion. I was quite the lucky girl to have the opportunity to interview Alex, which you can read below –

alex sosume

To start things off, what does fashion mean to you?

Fashion is a form of expression. It’s our uniform and it goes a long way to define us. I’m really interested in the how and why we buy the things that we do and how that impacts on the broader environment. Hence my decision to use sustainable fabrics and design classic styles for longevity.

How would you define your own personal style?

Quite simple and unrestricted. I don’t put too much thought into it and I don’t like to stand out in a crowd. I like well made, classic designs that last and also like supporting designers I believe adhere to these qualities.

Where do you get your inspiration?

Everywhere! But more so now than ever, it comes from when I start to source new fabrics for the next season; I get inspired by textures and colour palettes offered by the mills. I start thinking of what is the best way I can use these fabrics in various designs.

sosume

What matters to you most as a fashion designer? I personally love that you have environmentally friendly fashion……

Sustainability is a big deal. I try to consider all components of the sourcing and manufacturing processes to make sure everything I do has as little impact as possible with a fantastic end result. It should be the only way to do things.

What was the first article of clothing you ever designed?

It would have been a front pleated dress. It never made it into production though.

What are your favourite colours to work with and why?

It’s completely seasonal. I, myself, always prefer to wear darker colours but it really depends on the season I’m designing for. My favourites are earthy tones.

sosume

What are your favourite fabrics to work with and why?

I love modal because of its drape, luster, softness and superior qualities over cotton. I also like wool and mohair, cashmere and alpaca because their versatility.

You’re a Melbourne based designer, how would you describe your city’s style?

Everything! You get off the train at Flinder’s Street and within 2 minutes of walking around you see pretty much every genre is well represented. Overall, I would say that Melbournians are sophisticated, discerning, and understated.

Tell us more about your recent joining with The Black Dog Institute.

This is a great cause. I came across The Black Dog earlier in the year and when I noticed I had some unused fabric lying around, I thought I could put it to good use and try and do something worthwhile and meaningful to a large number of Australians. I came up with a simple concept that would be wearable for many, and still subtle so the design could be worn in a variety of settings and environments

Where can we purchase this fabulous charity tee from?

You can purchase the tee from sosumeclothing.com. All profits are donated to the Black Dog with an aim to raise over $10,000. Each tee is $50 with a flat rate postage fee of $6Australia wide. The tee comes in sizes 6 though to 14.

A very warm thank you to Alex Trimmer!

Me and My Happy Cow

grey dots

Remember those old bumbags? You thought you were cool with your synthetic fluoro bag clipped around your waist (I sure did) and just like scrunchie socks, bad perms and blue eye shadow we thought this accessory would stay where it belongs…right down the back of our closets.

But now, in 2010, I am a proudly slinging a belted bag around my hips and it is all because of Happy Cow. Their Leather Hip Bags aren’t your average bum bags, to begin with they are made from soft leather and come in neutral colours. The bag itself is attached to a leather belt so you can either thread it through the loops in your jeans, or you can fasten as required and let it sit on your hips.

(Wear it as a belt)

It’s probably about now that you are shaking your head and wondering why I am reviewing a leather accessory in the natural girl category when livestock breeding contributes a chunk to global warming.

The answer is that Happy Cow have teamed up with furniture manufacturers to make use of their scrap leather that would otherwise be thrown away. You can have all the benefits of handcrafted leather bags without any extra damage to the planet, and that is also why the company is called Happy Cow and not Sad Cow.

Now back to the Leather Hip Bag for a moment, unfortunately I don’t do a lot of jet-setting but this would be a great product for travellers as it allows you to keep all your essentials attached to you. There are also different zip compartments so you are less likely to be a target for bad, robber types.

(The Leather Hip Bags)

I am enjoying using the  Hip Bag, it means not having to worry about a handbag, and as long as you don’t fill it up too much (it’s called downsizing girls) then it is a cute accessory that is slimline and doesn’t create any extra bulk around your hips.

Beatrix New York Big Eco Packs

grey dots

Ever wondered what happens to all those plastic water bottles you recycle? Some of them are used in Beatrix New York’s Big Eco Packs, in fact the nylon made to create each one of these cuties is made entirely from 7 plastic bottles.

The trimming is made from “naturally biodegradable canvas” so every part of these bags are planet friendly. The Big Eco Packs are designed for 5 to 10 year olds (they also come in Little Eco Packs for ages 2 to 5), but even a female adult could make use of these lightweight backpacks if they wanted to – and I do want to! But the best person for this pink and grey Love design (pictured) would be a young girl on her first day of school.

These bags are a fantastic way to encourage your children to recycle “honey, recycle that bottle and another little girl can get a schoolbag too”.

big_eco_pack_love

We have been fans of the brand since the inception of Beauty and Lace, and over time have tried quite a few of their bags, and although we love them all, the green factor makes this a standout.

The size of the Big Eco Packs is 14 x 15 x 5.5″, that’s in inches ladies, and in addition to the main bag compartment there is a fairly roomy front zipped pocket and two side zipped pockets which are always convenient for drinks or items that need to be easily accessible. There is also a strap on top so that your children can hang them up at school.

A strong and well designed bag, with a touch of personality – it must be Love!!

Beatrix New York is based in the USA, but they have stockists worldwide or you can purchase directly through their website. For bags galore and more information on a fabulous world of Beatrix New York visit: www.beatrixny.com

Alex Keeps Green! (Eco Fashionista)

grey dots

Alex Hume is the Director and Creator of Eco Fashionista. She spoke to us about how she stays green and why she decided to turn her love for eco friendly fashion into a business.

alex hume from eco fashionista

(Alex Hume)

“I think that keeping green should be a way of life – not something that you do once in a while or something that should be hard. It’s all about making those small changes which make a big difference. I keep paper to a minimum in the office, use jute shopping bags, ride my bike whenever I can and use eco friendly light bulbs. These things all add up when you look at how much of an impact they can have in your street, in your city and in your state.”

Maria Vintage Dress

(Minna Maria Vintage Dress)

“When it comes to fashion I always look out for organic, natural and recycled materials, locally produced pieces and things that are handmade – real eco credentials, not green wash. I also like to buy investment pieces which will last the test of time and can be updated with funky and quirky accessories.

I had made lots of changes to my lifestyle in order to be green, the environment is something I’m passionate about and it’s not something we can ignore. I wanted to bring that philosophy to my wardrobe but found it really hard to source stylish pieces that were kind to the earth and so Eco Fashionista was born – an online boutique of all my favourite brands who share my passion for style and the earth. We have lots of coveted local and international labels on the site including Minna, Ciel and Apple and Bee.”

(Jude Jet Rosette Necklace)

“I encourage all of my customers to refer to our eco reference guide to find out exactly what it is that makes each piece eco friendly – it’s important we all make it our business to find out this information so that our appetite for the latest looks doesn’t undo the rest of the hard work we all do to be green.”

In 2008 and beyond, Beauty and Lace will be featuring a range of beauty, fashion and lifestyle products which are environmentally friendly.

Neco.com.au is an online store and one stop shop for all your home and eco giftware needs.

Thongs (also known as flip flops for our international readers) are an Australian icon and now there is a way to wear them and be kind to our planet.

neco thongs

Neco Stocks “Soul’s Massage Thongs” which are made with recycled, non toxic rubber materials.
With 25% recycled content the Souls massage thongs come in a range of colours (including pink – multi as pictured) making them suitable for both women and men.

souls massage thongs

They come with aerated bubbled which massage your feet as you walk. It is an unusual sensation but doesn’t take long to get used to.

The underneath is textured giving them a decent amount of grip and you are less likely to slip over, and they are don’t hurt your feet even after wearing for a day of shopping.

I found the Soul’s Massage Thongs to be comfortable and a great choice for casual weekend wear. They make a good alternative to traditional massage sandals as you are not limited to beige or black. They would also be a much appreciated gift for Mothers Day

These thongs are 100% recyclable!
